PCU Registered Nurse Job in Roanoke, VA

You'll work as a Registered Nurse in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, serving as a step-down unit for open heart and thoracic ICU patients. This is a 91-day travel assignment starting August 10, 2026, with three 12-hour day shifts per week (6:45 AM to 7:15 PM) at $2,258 weekly pay.

Unit Overview

• 25-bed PCU with daily census up to 20 patients
• Patient ratio of 4:1 goal, with typical 5:1 working ratio
• Post-heart surgery patients, adults and geriatrics
• Remote telemetry with unit-based monitors and tele sitting
• Two ventilator-capable beds for chronic trach patients

Clinical Responsibilities

• Cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including dysrhythmia interpretation and Rapid Response/Code team activation
• IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
• Central and peripheral line care, including PICC lines
• Cardiac drip management: Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, and Lasix (no titration)
• Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen delivery, CPAP, BiPAP, and non-invasive airway management
• Chest tube, trach, open wound, drain, and LVAD management
• Occasional floating within skillset to another PCU or Med-Surg unit

Requirements

• RN license with minimum 1 year of nursing experience; experience at a 250+ bed hospital preferred
• Post-heart surgery experience required
• ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications
• EPIC charting system experience required

Schedule & Expectations

• Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week scheduling block
• Minimum 1 holiday per 13-week contract
• Facility may call off 1 shift per 2-week period

Interdisciplinary support is available including IV Teams, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Services, Phlebotomy, Radiology, Social Services, and Pharmacy. First-time travelers are accepted depending on experience.
