Role Overview

You will provide direct patient care in a high-acuity surgical PCU serving complex post-operative patients from ENT, thoracic, general surgery, and urology specialties. The unit maintains a 1:3–4 patient staffing ratio and operates at near-ICU acuity levels. You may float to Med-Surg, additional PCU, or ICU levels at both University and Methodist Hospitals as operational needs require; contract refusal to float may result in termination.

  • Availability for every-other weekend coverage (6 weekends per 13-week contract); consecutive weekends possible based on operational needs
  • First-time travelers accepted

Core Clinical Skills

You must demonstrate competency in cardiac telemetry monitoring, chest tube management, fresh tracheostomy and trach care, feeding tube management, post-operative wound care, epidural management, non-titratable cardiac drip administration, IV insulin protocols and titration, BiPAP/CPAP management, total laryngectomy care, and doppler flap checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cerner charting system experience
  • Trauma Level I facility experience
  • Charge nurse experience (may be assigned charge responsibilities with provided training)
  • Arterial and central line management
  • Blood product administration and PICC line care
  • Wound care and wound vac management
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • PCA and thrombolytic agent management

Support and Training

The unit provides 48 orientation hours. Interdisciplinary resources include physical therapy, respiratory services, radiology, pharmacy, social services, and rapid response teams. You may be asked to precept or support student observers during your assignment.
