Travel CVOR Tech Jobs: Skills, Heart Cases, and Pay Premiums
August 9, 2026 · ADEX Healthcare Staffing
Cardiovascular OR techs occupy a narrow, high-stakes lane in surgical technology. The case mix is demanding, the credentialing bar is higher than general OR, and facilities will not staff a heart room with someone who has only scrubbed a handful of open cases. That combination of scarcity and complexity is exactly why CVOR travel contracts tend to pay a meaningful premium over general surgical tech assignments.
If you are a CVOR tech weighing your first travel contract or looking to upgrade your current situation, here is what you actually need to know.
What Facilities Mean When They Post a CVOR Tech Job
Job titles vary. You will see CVOR Technologist, Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist, Perfusion Scrub Tech, and Cardiac OR Tech used interchangeably across postings. The underlying expectation is usually the same: you can scrub open-heart cases independently and you are not going to need hand-holding in a room where a patient is on bypass.
Most contracts specify one or more of the following case types:
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), on-pump and off-pump
- Valve repair and replacement (aortic, mitral, tricuspid)
- Aortic aneurysm repair, including ascending and arch procedures
- Thoracic cases that cross into cardiac territory
- Hybrid OR cases combining open and endovascular approaches
Some facilities also want comfort with structural heart procedures in a cath-lab-adjacent environment, though that is a separate skill set and not always bundled into a CVOR posting.
Skills That Separate Competitive Candidates
A CST credential from NBSTSA is the baseline almost everywhere. Beyond that, facilities screening travel CVOR techs are looking for specifics.
Case volume and recency matter more than years of experience. A tech with three years of experience who has scrubbed 300 open cases in the last 18 months is a stronger candidate than someone with eight years who drifted into mostly peripheral vascular work. Be ready to speak to your recent case numbers in your skills checklist and interview.
Comfort with the heart-lung machine workflow. You are not a perfusionist, but you need to understand the bypass circuit well enough to anticipate what the team needs and to handle cannulation setups without confusion.
Instrument and implant familiarity. Facilities often ask about specific retractor systems, valve sizer sets, and whether you have worked with particular manufacturers' implants. This is not gatekeeping for its own sake - it directly affects room turnover and case safety.
Sternotomy and re-do sternotomy experience. Re-do cases are higher risk and slower. Facilities doing significant re-do volume want to know you have been in those rooms.
Why CVOR Contracts Pay a Premium
The short answer is supply and demand. General surgical techs are far more plentiful than CVOR-specialized techs. Cardiac programs cannot simply pull a float tech from the orthopedic room to cover a heart case.
Travel CVOR tech pay typically runs higher than general OR tech contracts for a few reasons:
- The specialty pool is smaller, so facilities compete harder for available travelers
- Heart programs often have strict minimum experience requirements that eliminate most candidates
- Call requirements are common, and cardiac call pays more than general surgical call
- Many cardiac programs run nights and weekends for urgent cases, which adds shift differentials
Actual weekly gross varies significantly by region, facility type, and whether the contract includes call. Rather than quoting figures that may be outdated by the time you read this, check current CVOR tech openings on ADEX for live pay packages tied to specific locations.
What to Expect on Assignment
Most CVOR travel contracts run 13 weeks, though extensions are common at facilities with ongoing cardiac volume. A few things to anticipate:
Orientation is shorter than you want it to be. Facilities are not going to give you four weeks to learn their preference cards. Expect one to three days of orientation, heavy reliance on your own experience, and a fast ramp to independent scrubbing.
Call is often non-negotiable. Many cardiac programs require travelers to take call at the same rate as staff. Clarify call expectations, call-back pay rates, and on-call hour limits before you sign.
Credentialing timelines can be slow. Cardiac programs at larger academic or tertiary centers sometimes have longer privileging processes. Start your paperwork early and stay on top of your recruiter to avoid a delayed start date.
Markets With Consistent CVOR Demand
High-volume cardiac programs tend to cluster in larger metro areas and in states with older population demographics. Texas, Florida, and the Southeast generally show consistent CVOR traveler demand. Tertiary referral centers and academic medical centers in mid-size cities can also be strong markets because they run complex cardiac programs but have smaller local labor pools to draw from.
If you want to filter by state, the ADEX job board lets you search CVOR openings by location so you can compare what is actually posted rather than relying on generalizations.
Before You Accept a CVOR Contract
A few questions worth asking before you sign:
- What is the weekly case volume and mix? A facility doing five cases a week is a different environment than one doing twenty.
- Is this a replacement for a traveler who left, or a new position? If someone just left, find out why.
- What is the staff-to-traveler ratio in the cardiac OR? A room staffed mostly by travelers is a yellow flag.
- Are there minimum call hours built into the contract, and what is the callback rate?
- Does the facility have a hybrid OR, and are travelers expected to scrub those cases?
CVOR travel is genuinely one of the better-compensated niches in allied health travel. The tradeoff is that the work is demanding, the learning curve on a new assignment is steep, and facilities have little patience for techs who oversold their experience. Go in with accurate expectations on both sides and it tends to work well.
