About this role

Baptist Healthcare System, Inc. in Paducah, Kentucky is seeking a First Assist Technician to join the surgical team on a 91-day travel assignment. You will work 5x8 night shifts at a weekly rate of $2,664, with a start date of July 23, 2026.

Your Role

You will assist surgeons in performing surgical procedures and serve as the surgeon's chief assistant in the operating room. Your responsibilities include scrubbing into cases, assisting the primary scrub with setup and opening of sterile supplies, and ensuring all instruments and supplies are available and thoroughly sterilized for scheduled cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the sterile field during case setup and throughout each procedure
  • Alert the circulating nurse of any identified risks or variances from standard operating procedures
  • Assist with patient positioning, sterile draping, and circulating duties as needed
  • Pass instruments and provide assistance to the physician during procedures
  • Perform clamping, cauterizing, tying, and application of ligating clamps, hemostatic clips, and hemostatic agents on vessels and tissue
  • Apply running or interrupted sutures on wound layers including muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin
  • First assist in cardiothoracic procedures, including saphenous vein harvesting (open and endoscopic)
  • Perform post-case cleaning duties alongside the circulating nurse and orderlies
  • Handle point-of-use cleaning of instruments and prepare instruments for Central Sterile Processing
  • Follow all standards for instrument transport and return to Central Sterile
  • Notify leadership of any damaged instruments at the end of a case
  • Ensure the surgical suite is disinfected and ready for the next procedure

Required Experience

CVOR (cardiovascular operating room) experience is required for this position. You hold an Allied Health Professional credential and bring expertise in first assist surgical techniques.
