Nuclear medicine is one of the smallest imaging specialties in travel healthcare, and that scarcity cuts both ways. Fewer open positions means less competition for the ones that do post - but it also means you can't afford to sit on the sidelines waiting for the perfect offer. If you hold a CNMT or ARRT(N) credential and you're considering travel, here's a realistic look at how this market works.
The Credential Landscape: CNMT vs. ARRT(N)
Two primary credentials open doors in nuclear medicine travel: the CNMT (Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist, issued by NMTCB) and the ARRT(N) (Nuclear Medicine Technology certification from ARRT). Most facilities accept either, but some state licensing boards and individual hospital credentialing offices have preferences.
A few things worth knowing before you submit applications:
- Dual credentials help. Holding both CNMT and ARRT(N) removes friction during credentialing and makes you eligible at a wider pool of facilities. If you only have one, check whether your target state requires a specific one.
- PET/CT adds real value. Many postings now list PET/CT experience as required rather than preferred. If your current staff position doesn't include PET volume, try to get it before you go travel.
- State licenses vary widely. Some states require a separate nuclear medicine license; others accept your national credential. Factor in processing time - some state boards take six to ten weeks - when you're planning your first assignment start date.
Why PET Expansion Is Driving Demand
PET imaging has grown steadily as oncology protocols increasingly rely on FDG-PET for staging, restaging, and treatment response. Beyond oncology, amyloid and tau PET tracers for neurology are expanding the scan menu at academic and research-affiliated centers. Cardiac PET with rubidium or ammonia is also growing at larger cardiovascular programs.
What this means practically: facilities that previously ran one PET/CT scanner are adding a second, and outpatient imaging centers that never had PET are now building programs. Each new program needs at least one experienced tech who can train staff and troubleshoot. Travel techs often fill that gap during ramp-up.
The catch is that not every market has a cyclotron nearby, which limits which tracers are available and affects scan volume. When you're evaluating a contract, ask the recruiter what the daily scan mix looks like - a site doing three FDG scans a day is a different job than one running eight to twelve.
How the Small Market Works in Your Favor
Nuclear medicine has roughly 20,000 credentialed practitioners in the U.S. across all settings. That's a fraction of the radiologic tech workforce. Travel positions in this specialty don't flood job boards the way med-surg nursing contracts do, but the supply-demand math still favors the traveler in a few specific ways:
- Facilities can't easily substitute. A hospital can't pull a general rad tech into a hot lab. When a nuclear medicine tech leaves or goes on leave, the facility has limited options.
- Contract rates tend to hold. Because the pool of qualified travelers is small, facilities rarely lowball the rate and expect someone to take it. Rates are more stable than in oversaturated specialties.
- Extensions are common. If you do good work and the facility likes you, they often extend rather than restart a search. That continuity can be valuable if you want to stay in a city longer.
The downside is real too: if you're geographically rigid, you may wait months between contracts. Nuclear medicine travel works best for techs who are genuinely flexible about location.
What to Look for in a Contract
Beyond the weekly gross, a few contract details matter more in nuclear medicine than in higher-volume specialties:
- On-call expectations. Some facilities require nuclear medicine techs to take call for urgent bone scans or cardiac stress studies. Clarify frequency and compensation before signing.
- Radiopharmacy relationship. Ask whether the facility uses a commercial radiopharmacy or has an in-house hot lab. In-house means you may be doing more dose preparation and quality control work.
- Equipment. Knowing whether you'll be working on a SPECT/CT, a dedicated PET/CT, or an older dual-head gamma camera affects both your workload and your resume. Newer equipment experience is worth something on your next application.
- Staffing ratio. A solo tech covering a full department is a different assignment than working alongside two or three others. Ask directly.
Finding Contracts and Timing Your Search
Nuclear medicine travel positions don't stay open long. When a facility finally decides to use a traveler, they usually want someone credentialed and ready to start within two to four weeks. That means your licenses, certifications, and health records need to be current before you start applying - not after you get an offer.
