Travel Nursing in Raleigh-Durham, NC: The Triangle Guide
July 5, 2026 · ADEX Healthcare Staffing
Raleigh-Durham sits in a strange spot for travel nurses. The pay packages rarely top national headlines, but the clinical environment is legitimately strong, the cost of living is manageable compared to other major metros, and the area keeps growing fast enough that contract volume stays steady. If you want academic medicine without paying San Francisco rent, the Triangle deserves a serious look.
Why the Triangle Is So Academic-Heavy
Three factors converge here that you don't see in many markets.
First, the anchor institutions. Duke University Hospital in Durham is a Level I trauma center and major transplant and oncology hub. UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill is the flagship hospital for the University of North Carolina health system and another Level I trauma center with strong research programs. WakeMed Health and Hospitals, headquartered in Raleigh, is the region's primary safety-net and trauma system and operates several campuses across Wake County.
Second, Research Triangle Park. The concentration of biotech, pharma, and life sciences companies in the area creates demand for clinical research nurses and specialty staff that spills into the hospital systems.
Third, population growth. The Triangle has been one of the fastest-growing metros in the country for over a decade. More residents means more hospital capacity, more expansion projects, and more consistent need for supplemental staffing - including travelers.
The practical implication for you: expect high acuity, strong orientation expectations, and charge nurses who actually know their stuff. Academic centers tend to be less forgiving of travelers who show up underprepared.
What Specialties Are in Demand
Demand shifts by season and facility, so check live listings rather than relying on any static list. That said, the Triangle consistently needs travelers in a few areas:
- ICU and critical care - Duke and UNC both run large ICU programs with subspecialty units (cardiac, neuro, surgical). Expect to document your experience carefully when applying.
- Med-surg and step-down - WakeMed's growth has kept these units busy, and the system runs multiple campuses.
- OR and surgical services - Academic centers do high volumes of complex cases. If you have specialty OR experience, it's worth highlighting.
- Emergency - All three systems run busy EDs. UNC and Duke see a lot of complex referrals; WakeMed handles a high proportion of trauma.
- Labor and delivery - UNC has a well-known maternal-fetal medicine program. L&D travelers with high-risk experience tend to find openings here.

Pay and Housing: What to Expect
North Carolina is not a top-paying state for travel nurses. That's just the reality. Academic centers in particular tend to offer lower bill rates than community hospitals in high-cost states. What partially offsets that is the cost of living.
Raleigh-Durham housing is more expensive than it was five years ago, but still cheaper than comparable academic markets in the Northeast or California. Furnished short-term rentals exist in most parts of the metro, though you'll pay a premium for anything close to Duke's campus in Durham or Chapel Hill near UNC.
A few practical notes on housing:
- Durham's downtown and the Ninth Street corridor are walkable and close to Duke, but short-term inventory is limited.
- Raleigh has more rental options and is roughly 25-30 minutes from both Duke and UNC by highway.
- Cary and Morrisville are suburban, affordable, and convenient to WakeMed's main campus and RTP.
- Chapel Hill itself is tight on housing and prices reflect the university town premium.
Always verify your tax home situation before accepting a stipend-heavy package. The Triangle attracts a lot of travelers from the Southeast who may not have a qualifying tax home.
Getting Around the Triangle
The Triangle is a driving metro. There is a commuter rail line (the GoTriangle bus network and a limited rail corridor), but realistically you need a car. Traffic on I-40 between Raleigh and Durham can be genuinely bad during rush hour, so factor commute time into your housing decision.
Parking at Duke's medical campus is managed and can be a hassle. Ask your unit contact about traveler parking before your first shift.
What to Do Outside the Hospital
This is an underrated part of the Triangle's appeal. The area has a lot going on for a mid-size metro.
- Food and drink - Durham has developed a legitimate restaurant scene over the past decade. The Durham Food Hall, the Brightleaf district, and the area around Duke Street have solid options.
- Outdoors - Falls Lake State Recreation Area north of Raleigh offers hiking and water access. Jordan Lake near Cary is popular for kayaking and camping.
- Sports - College basketball is a religion here. If you're a fan, being in Duke or UNC territory during ACC season is an experience.
- Music and arts - The Carolina Theatre in Durham and the Duke Performances series bring in consistent programming. Raleigh's Warehouse District has live music venues.
- Day trips - The Blue Ridge Parkway is about three hours west. The Outer Banks is roughly three hours east. Both are worth a long weekend.
Is the Triangle Worth It for Travelers?
It depends on what you're optimizing for. If your primary goal is maximum weekly pay, you can probably do better in California, Texas, or the Pacific Northwest. If you want strong clinical experience at academic centers, a reasonable cost of living, and a city that's actually enjoyable to live in for 13 weeks, the Triangle holds up well. The growth trajectory of the market also means contract availability is unlikely to dry up anytime soon.
