About this role

You will work as a registered nurse on a 32-bed telemetry unit at Mercy Hospital Southwest in Bakersfield. This is a night shift position: 3 twelve-hour shifts per week, 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with every other weekend requirement (Friday and Saturday nights). You will earn $2,122 weekly and work a 91-day contract beginning November 9, 2026.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and care for acute and chronic medical patients, post-surgical patients (including bariatrics and total joints), stroke patients, and those recovering from urology, gynecology, podiatry, and general surgery procedures
  • Manage patients with potential oncology conditions
  • Administer set-rate drips including Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Heparin without titration
  • Read and interpret cardiac rhythms using GE cardiac monitors
  • Operate CPAP and BiPAP equipment per RT and MD orders
  • Maintain nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4 for telemetry patients and 1:5 for med-surg patients
  • Conduct bedside shift reports and intentional hourly rounding
  • Provide medication teaching including side effects

Unit details: All 32 beds are private. Shift huddles occur at 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM daily. You will receive one to two shifts of preceptor-led orientation. Charting uses the Cerner system; Cerner experience is preferred.

Floating and scheduling: Travelers are first to float and may be reassigned to other med-surg telemetry units, ICU for med-surg telemetry patients, or ER for med-surg telemetry holds. There is no on-call requirement, but you may be placed on standby for low census with a 30-minute response time if called in. One major and one minor holiday minimum are required within the contract period.

Requirements:

  • Current RN license
  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience
  • ACLS certification (AHA)
  • BLS certification (AHA)
  • NIHSS certification (AHA or APEX)
  • BSN not required

Dress code: Navy blue scrubs with navy, white, or black undershirts. Scrub jackets must be navy. No hoodies, sweatshirts, or sweat jackets permitted.
