Travel Nursing in Indianapolis, IN: Pay, Hospitals, and Neighborhoods
July 5, 2026 · ADEX Healthcare Staffing
Indianapolis does not get the same hype as Nashville or Denver on the travel nursing circuit, but that works in your favor. Cost of living is low, the hospital market is large and varied, and contracts come up consistently across specialties. If you are weighing an Indy assignment, here is a practical breakdown.
The Major Hospital Systems
Most travel contracts in Indianapolis flow through four systems. Each has a different culture and patient mix, so it is worth knowing the differences before you sign.
IU Health
Indiana University Health is the largest health system in the state and runs multiple facilities in the metro area, including Methodist Hospital and University Hospital on the downtown campus. University Hospital is the academic flagship, which means higher acuity, residents, and a faster pace. Methodist handles a heavy trauma and cardiac load. IU Health tends to draw travelers into ICU, ED, and OR roles more than med-surg, though all specialties come up. Float pool assignments across IU Health campuses are common for travelers, so read your contract carefully if you want to stay on one unit.
Eskenazi Health
Eskenazi is the county safety-net hospital and Level I trauma center. It serves a high-acuity, underinsured population, which makes it a genuinely demanding assignment. Travelers who want real trauma and critical care volume come here. The environment is not for everyone, but clinicians who thrive in safety-net settings often prefer it to the larger academic system. Eskenazi also houses a burn unit and a psychiatric emergency department, so specialty travelers in those areas should watch for openings.
Riley Hospital for Children
Riley is the state's only freestanding children's hospital and is part of the IU Health system. Pediatric travel contracts here are competitive and do not open as frequently as adult med-surg roles. If you are a PICU, pediatric ED, or pediatric heme-onc nurse, it is worth setting a job alert specifically for Riley. Pediatric specialty experience is generally required; this is not a place to cross-train into pediatrics for the first time.
Community Health Network
Community Health runs several suburban hospitals across the metro, including facilities in Fishers, Noblesville, and the east and north sides of Indianapolis. Acuity is generally lower than IU Health or Eskenazi, which some travelers prefer, especially if they want a more predictable schedule. Community tends to have more med-surg and step-down openings than critical care.
Pay Ranges in Indianapolis
Indianapolis is not a high-cost-of-living market, and pay packages reflect that. Weekly gross for most RN travelers in standard med-surg or step-down roles runs in the lower-to-mid range compared to coastal markets. Critical care, OR, and pediatric specialty roles pay more, and crisis contracts during high-census periods can push packages noticeably higher.
Because pay varies by specialty, shift, and current demand, the most accurate way to see what is actually posted is to browse open Indianapolis RN jobs on ADEX. Packages also differ based on whether you qualify for tax-free stipends, which depends on your tax home situation - verify that with a travel tax professional before you assume the full package applies to you.
Neighborhoods Worth Knowing
Indianapolis is a car-dependent city, so where you live matters mostly in terms of commute and cost.
- Broad Ripple and Meridian-Kessler - Popular with younger travelers. Walkable by Indy standards, good restaurant and bar scene, about 15-20 minutes from downtown hospitals. Rent is higher than most of the city but still reasonable nationally.
- Fountain Square and Bates-Hendricks - South of downtown, more affordable, artsy neighborhood with good food options. Reasonable commute to IU Health and Eskenazi.
- Fishers and Carmel - Northern suburbs, very safe, newer housing stock, good for travelers with families or those who want quiet. Better positioned for Community Health Network assignments than downtown facilities.
- Downtown/Mass Ave corridor - Convenient to IU Health and Eskenazi, but furnished short-term rentals downtown can be expensive relative to the rest of the city. Worth comparing against Broad Ripple before you commit.
Furnished short-term rentals are available through the usual platforms. Indy has enough corporate housing inventory that you should not have trouble finding something, especially outside of major convention weekends when downtown hotels and rentals spike.
What to Know Before You Sign
A few things specific to Indianapolis contracts that are worth flagging:
- Indiana does not have a state income tax compact with many other states, so check your withholding situation if you are coming from out of state.
- Parking at downtown hospitals is a real cost. Some travelers factor in $100-200 per month for parking when comparing net pay.
- IU Health uses Epic; Eskenazi uses a different system. If you have been away from a particular EMR, ask about orientation time.
- Winter driving in Indianapolis is real. January and February assignments require a car that handles snow, or at minimum, flexibility on your commute.
Is Indianapolis Worth It?
For travelers who prioritize low cost of living, consistent contract availability, and genuine clinical variety, Indianapolis is a solid market. It is not going to pay like San Francisco or Seattle, but your stipend goes further here than in most major metros. The hospital systems are large enough that you have real choices about acuity and environment, which matters more than most travelers admit when they are comparing raw weekly pay numbers.
