Travel Nursing in Nashville, TN: Vanderbilt, HCA, and the Music Scene Trade-Off
April 23, 2026 · ADEX Healthcare Staffing
Nashville's healthcare scene punches above its weight for a market its size. Vanderbilt University Medical Center alone draws travelers from every state — top-5 academic medical center, Level 1 trauma, transplant program, the whole spread. Add in HCA's massive presence (Nashville is HCA's headquarters market) and you get steady year-round demand across nearly every specialty.
The trade-off: Nashville has gotten expensive, and the music scene that drew everyone here in 2018 now means tourist crowds every weekend.
The hospital landscape
- Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) — Level 1 trauma, academic, teaching hospital. Highest acuity in Tennessee. Full slate of specialties including pediatric trauma at Vanderbilt Children's.
- TriStar Health (HCA) — multiple campuses (Centennial, Skyline, Southern Hills, Hendersonville, Summit, StoneCrest). Volume-heavy, less acuity than Vanderbilt but more variety.
- Saint Thomas Health (Ascension) — Saint Thomas West, Saint Thomas Midtown. Strong cardiac program.
- Nashville General Hospital — Meharry's teaching hospital, smaller but high-acuity inner-city population.
Specialties in demand
Across all systems: ED, ICU, OR, L&D, Med-Surg Tele are the consistent ones. VUMC also runs heavy demand for Cath Lab, Cardiac Stepdown, Trauma ICU, and NICU. HCA TriStar facilities post steady PCU and OR/PACU travel needs.

Pay range expectations
Tennessee has no state income tax (good for your take-home). Pay sits in the middle nationally — VUMC pays top-of-market for academic experience, HCA pays steady mid-market for volume. Realistic 2026 ranges:
- ICU: $2,300–$3,000/wk
- ED: $2,200–$2,900/wk
- L&D: $2,300–$2,800/wk
- Med-Surg Tele: $1,800–$2,400/wk
- OR: $2,400–$3,200/wk
Cost of living has crept up significantly since 2020 — short-term housing is the biggest hit. Budget accordingly.
Where to live
- The Nations / Sylvan Park — west Nashville, quieter, food-forward, easier commute to VUMC.
- East Nashville — the food and music heart of the city, longer drive to most hospitals, weekends are loud.
- Green Hills — closer to VUMC, more residential, more expensive.
- Brentwood / Franklin (south) — suburban, family-friendly, longer commute, cheaper than central.
- 12 South / Hillsboro Village — central, walkable, premium rents.
Avoid the Broadway / Lower Broad area for housing unless you genuinely want bachelorette parties at 2 AM.
What to do on days off
- The music. Free or cheap live music every single night. The Bluebird Cafe (book ahead), The Station Inn, Robert's Western World on Lower Broad (touristy but iconic), 3rd and Lindsley, the Basement.
- Food. Hot chicken everywhere (Hattie B's is the touristy original; Bolton's and Prince's are the locals' picks). Husk for fancy night out. Arnold's Country Kitchen for meat-and-three.
- Outdoor. Percy Warner Park trails, Radnor Lake (no dogs, no bikes — just walking), the Cumberland River, Center Hill Lake (1 hour east).
- Day trips. Franklin (Civil War history), Lynchburg (Jack Daniel's distillery, dry county), Smoky Mountains (3 hours east), Mammoth Cave KY (90 minutes north).
- Sports. Predators (NHL), Titans (NFL), Nashville SC (MLS).
What to know before signing
- Tornado season. March through May. Take it seriously.
- Hot, humid summers. Less brutal than Florida but still notable.
- Tourist crowds. Lower Broadway is unwalkable on weekends. Eat and drink in East Nashville or 12 South.
- The "It city" tax. Housing and dining cost more than they did three years ago. Budget like you are in Charlotte or Austin, not like you are in Memphis.
The bottom line
Nashville delivers genuine academic trauma exposure (VUMC) plus volume work (HCA) plus a city you will genuinely enjoy when you are off shift. Submit early to VUMC contracts — they fill fast and pay well.
