Med Surg RN Job in Wheeling, WV

WVU Wheeling Hospital is seeking a registered nurse for the Medical-Surgical unit. You will work 3x12-hour night shifts (6:45 PM to 7:15 AM) on a schedule made 6 weeks at a time, with an every-other-weekend requirement (3 weekends per 6-week cycle; nights schedule is Friday/Saturday).

Unit Overview

This Med Surg unit handles orthopaedic post-ops, basic neuro post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), general post-ops (gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomies), and medical diagnoses including COPD, pneumonia, and cellulitis. You will care for patients at a 1:6–7 ratio (typically 1:7). CNA support is available at 1:10–12 ratio, with typically 4–6 CNAs per shift.

Clinical Details

• Hemodialysis is performed on this unit; experience with peritoneal dialysis is highly preferred
• Common drips include Heparin, PCAs with MSO4, and occasional Ativan; no cardiac drips or continuous insulin
• Respiratory support includes intermittent BiPAP, CPAP, and High Flow; respiratory therapists are in-house 24/7
• IV Team starts all IVs; you will assess IV sites only
• Remote telemetry available as needed and monitored on a separate unit; RNs are not required to read strips
• Pharmacy and hospitalist are in-house 24/7

Requirements

• Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required; ACLS is a plus
• BSN not required
• Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver's license at submission; 50-mile radius rule applies
• Any licensing hits must be disclosed at submission

Additional Information

You may float to other Med Surg or Med Surg/Oncology units, or to IMC for Med Surg overflow only with no drips. Orientation includes general hospital orientation followed by 2 full shifts on the unit. The EMR system is Sunrise (Allscripts). Dress code is navy blue top and bottom with navy scrub jackets; hoodies are not permitted. Staff may submit up to 6 requests off per 6-week schedule. The contract allows up to 2 shift cancellations per 13-week period.
