PCU Registered Nurse Job in Charlottesville, VA

You will work as a Registered Nurse in the Progressive Care Unit at University of Virginia Medical Center, caring for adult and geriatric patients recovering from cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Role and Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care on a 28-bed split unit with 22 acute telemetry beds and 6 intermediate care beds
• Manage post-operative patients including those recovering from CABG, cardiac valve repair and replacement, AAA repair, lung resection, esophagectomy, heart and lung transplant, limb amputations, and carotid endarterectomy
• Maintain nurse-patient ratios of 4:1 in acute care and 3:1 in the thoracic intermediate care unit
• Operate specialized equipment including arterial lines, chest tubes, mediastinal tubes, Jackson Pratt drains, bladder scanner, ECG machines, portable monitors, and epidural patient-controlled analgesia pumps
• Perform independent ECG interpretation and manage nurse-driven heparin, Ketamine, and Nitro drips
• Utilize aggressive insulin management systems and interpret dysrhythmias through telemetry monitoring
• Chart in Epic system and adhere to float policy within your scope of practice

Position Details

• Night shift: 3 days per week, 12-hour shifts (36 hours weekly)
• 13-week contract starting September 28, 2026
• Every other weekend and every other holiday required
• Up to 40 hours of pre-approved time off per contract; no additional time off approved after offer acceptance
• Time off around July 4th cannot be approved
• Block scheduling cannot be accommodated or guaranteed

Requirements

• Current Virginia nursing license (pending licenses accepted; must be in hand by Wednesday before start date)
• BLS certification required
• Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
• Epic charting system experience required
• ACLS certification preferred
• BSN preferred
• Charge experience preferred

Compensation

Weekly pay: $2,072
